December 10, 2022, is the 74th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations. The document is associated with Eleanor Roosevelt because she championed it, though it was drafted by a Canadian, John Humphrey. In this Sunday service, philosopher Cliff DuRand will discuss the record of the United States as an upholder of economic and political rights declared in that historic document.

In the United States its provisions on political rights are often celebrated.  And our institutions and leaders have a good record in upholding them. But its provisions for economic rights are widely ignored because the United States does not observe them.  For example, it declares that “everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services.”

December 6:

Judith Jenya's Book Reading and Signing

Come Hear Judith Jenya Read from Her New Book for the First Time!

You’re invited to join Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Judith Jenya December 6, 2022, for a special live event: the first reading and signing of her new memoir, Memories Do Not Burn.

A fierce visionary, Judith’s writing recounts her work with children facing war and violence in Bosnia, Croatia, and Northern Ireland, and arranging adoptions of Russian children with American families. She also narrates her many acts of kindness for children in Albania, Jordan, and Los Angeles.

You’ll learn about the adversity she faced creating and running summer camps for children during wartime – camps that were havens of peace, healing, and hope while conflicts raged around the youngest victims. This inspiring, adventure-filled work also delivers captivating insights into the children's and volunteer counselors' lives, even as it reveals Judith’s motivations and feelings about being a peace activist.

The event will be held from 4 – 5 p.m. at Café Murmullo, Ancha de San Antonio 25, in the Instituto Allende. It is free, but capacity is limited to 40 people. Those signing up through UUFSMA’s auction will receive a discount on food and/or beverage purchases. A portion of book sale proceeds will benefit UUFSMA.

Sign up via the sign-up sheets at Sunday services at Hotel Aldea between 10 a.m. and Noon, or contact Diana Amaya at info.uufsma@gmail.com.

Welcome Back to New Member: Judy McKay

Judy McKay has been living in San Miguel for more than 25 years- since she arrived here with her late husband. Together they joined our Fellowship soon after they arrived.  She served previously in a few capacities: meet/greet initially, on the board with some stints at recording secretary, and newsletter writing/editing (in the days pre-computer programs when it was a cut and paste and take it to the printer operation).  Judy also used to be called on to speak occasionally when some humor was needed on the podium. Judy lives in La Lejona. If you would like to send a welcoming email to her, you can contact her at smarentals@gmail.com.

Young Explorers - Young Explorers' adult assistants are needed. Explorers meet during Sunday's adult services, mainly inside the Hotel Aldea, ONLY on the 1st Sunday of the month- except during January's break. May 2023 is the final session.

Previous experience and joy when with children is required, previous UU training to work with children is not required. Our facilitators will ensure you are oriented on an as needed basis.
Please let us know which 1st. Sundays could work with your schedule.

Sunday Service Committee - Join our team of creative, dedicated volunteers who produce this fellowship’s Sunday Services. Whether it’s coordinating the music, finding appropriate readings and hymns, acting as Service Leader or helping
to find lay speakers, our committee members do important work and have fun while we are doing it! We meet once per month by Zoom and do most of our work behind the scenes by phone calls and emails. Come add your skills and talents to our team! Visit our next meeting to see what we do!

Zoom Hosting - To continue our Zoom broadcast of Sunday Services, we are looking for several more volunteers who are available for 1 Sunday every few months. We can train anyone who has basic computer skills, and this task can be done from anywhere in the world. This requires reliable internet access and a laptop or desktop computer.

Finance Committee - If you have a background and/or interest in accounting, finance, investments, banking, or a hankering to talk about money policies, please consider joining the Finance Committee that meets quarterly to make financial recommendations to the Board of Directors.

Social Action Committee - Our Social Action Committee, which works all year to vet and monitor our Fellowship’s grantees, has a couple of vacancies available for dynamic members who like to be close to the action! We only meet once a month, typically via Zoom, and we share what each of us has learned about the nonprofits we steward. Each of us on the team feels personally enriched by the relationships we have developed with our grantees, which are prominent nonprofits that have proven themselves capable of serving those most in need. We are honored to support the wonderful things they do.

Tuesday Discussion Group, November 29, 2022 (11:00am)

The Tuesday Zoom discussion group will be led by Lou Marines.

Topic: HEROISM
HEROISM is defined by Webster as conduct fulfilling a high purpose or attaining a noble end.
Heroes don't always have to face danger or save lives.
Think of examples of heroes or heroines you've personally known or learned about. What quality did they exhibit that was admirable? What drove them to achieve the noble end result? Have you ever been someone's hero?
