It is often joked, “Oh, Unitarian Universalists can believe anything.” As this Sunday’s Guest Speakers will explain, that perception is not quite true. What is true is that UUs are not given a dogma of beliefs to adhere to. Instead, followers of Unitarian Universalism assemble around a principled set of values.

The specific religious or spiritual beliefs of individual Unitarian Universalists often differ and change over time during their continuing journeys to find meaning, truth, and purpose. As the Reverend Gary Kowalski said, “Babies don’t believe anything. Babies aren’t born Buddhists or Baptists or believers of any sort. They arrive in the world and begin to gather ideas.”

Many UU communities have rituals of various names to allow members to share beliefs and spiritual journeys. We call such sharing, “This I Believe”. Such public expressions allow UUs to know themselves – as a community and as individuals.

The UUFSMA Board of Directors will meet at 1:30pm. Thursday May 12 on Zoom. Members are welcome to attend by contacting Margo Johnson, uufsma.president@gmail.com to receive the meeting link.

Any visitor who wishes to address the Board is asked to discuss the topic with Margo prior to the meeting, and will have an opportunity to speak at the end of the meeting.

A Board report will be distributed in next week’s newsletter about action taken at the meeting.

Thanks,

Margo Johnson
The UUFSMA has an opportunity to have five (5) voting delegates to the 2022 UU General Assembly to be held June 22-26 in-person in Portland, OR, and virtually via Zoom.

This is a wonderful opportunity for UUFSMA members to learn more about Unitarian Universalist, get ideas about fundraising, hear marvelous speakers, participate in group discussions, and interact with members from around the world to discuss what other Fellowships are doing in Social Justice, committee structure and goals, and make new friends as you broaden your knowledge about what UU’s are doing to bring peace, fairness, and action to all parts of our earth.

Please take a few minutes and look at the GA information, and if you are interested in being a delegate or find one session interesting please email Rev. Tom Rosiello at tomrosiello@gmail.com or President Margo Johnson at uufsma.president@gmail.com.

The Fellowship will not cover the expenses for the conference, but if financial aid is needed please let Tom or Margo know.

The four day GA experience will be the highlight of this summer’s activities...
Don’t miss it.

Gratitude from Caminamos Juntos

Hello Margo,

I want to introduce myself and congratulate you on your new position with the UUFSMA. Cathy Canepa, Dan Neuspiel and Tom Rosiello speak very highly of you. I am the President of the board of Caminamos Juntos, CJ.

Yesterday, I met with Tom to thank him for being an Ambassador for CJ. We recently received a substantial donation from someone who gave in honor of Tom’s good work. I subsequently had a phone conversation with the donor and realized that she learned of CJ through Tom. I remembered that we have had several donations from others outside of the UUFSMA congregation due to Tom’s ambassadorship.

As you know Caminamos Juntos' seed money was given by your congregation; plus we have received two grants from your Social Action committee. And of course there was the Tom Paxton concert. In reflection, CJ owes much to Tom and the UUFSMA and I wanted to share our gratitude with you and the other board members. We know we can always count on your support, counsel and collaboration.

In Peace,

Sandy

Tuesday Discussion group, May 10, 2022 (11:00am)

The Tuesday Zoom discussion group will be led by Lou Marines.

Topic: How do we want to live out our lives?
What time horizon do we have in mind? How do we prepare for uncertainty, whether we have "unfinished business or dreams", how much of this is individual or dependent on relationships, and of course the "Why" behind our plans and what we imagine success looks and feels like?

How close are we to echoing Mary Oliver's observation that, with a life well lived, "When it's over...I don't want to end up simply having visited this world."?

Friday Buddhist Group, Sangha of the Heart (10:00am)
Regular participation is encouraged or drop-in when you want. Please email Joan at joanwolf@umich.edu if you would like to be added to the Sangha of the Heart email list and receive the Zoom link in a weekly reminder.
